How Far in Advance Should I Purchase My Wedding Dress?

Your wedding is one of the most significant events of your life, and preparing for the big day can take months or years for most couples. But when exactly should you start shopping for your gown? It’s a totally fair question—and one that can make a big difference in how stress-free (or stressful) your bridal journey feels! While every bride's timeline looks a little different, we’re here to break down the ideal timing, what to consider when shopping, and what to do if you're cutting it close.

Start Early

We recommend starting your dress search about 9 to 12 months before your wedding day. It might sound early, but bridal gowns aren’t typically an off-the-rack item! Once you find "the one," the boutique will likely need to order your specific size and may need to include your own customizations or design modifications. Your dress will likely take 4–6 months to arrive, and you should allow at least another 2–3 months for alterations to get the perfect fit.

What to Expect When You Shop

Shopping for your wedding gown is a unique experience. Unlike shopping for everyday clothes, you won’t take home the actual gown you try on! Bridal boutiques usually carry sample sizes of each gown in store, which are unlikely to fit like a glove. The sample gown will be temporarily fitted to your body when you try it on, allowing you to try on a range of gowns even if the dress isn’t technically your size. Once you say yes to a dress, your stylist will order it in the size closest to your measurements. From there, it will be further tailored to fit your body perfectly.

Alterations are a standard part of the process and can include anything from adjusting the hem to reshaping the neckline or taking in the waist. You’ll likely need two or three fittings, so building in extra time is key.

Running Behind? Don’t Panic.

If you’re on a shorter timeline, all is not lost! Many designers offer rush delivery options (usually for an extra fee), and some bridal salons carry off-the-rack gowns you can take home the same day. Just be sure to communicate your timeline clearly with your stylist right away—we’re here to help you find the perfect dress, no matter the schedule. If we know you have a tighter deadline, we’ll ensure that the gowns you try can be ready in time for your big day!
